Derek Slade – “Edward Marsh”

6th September 2010

HELP A POOR CHILD played its part in bringing justice to the victims of disgraced Derek Slade, a former headmaster at a UK boys’ school and ex-representative of HELP A POOR CHILD (HAPC) India.

Derek Slade was today jailed for 21 years for sexually abusing and hitting pupils.  He was convicted in the UK of the offences against 12 boys aged between eight and thirteen.

HAPC would like to assure its members, supporters and visitors to this website that, during his association with the charity, Derek Slade did not get the opportunity to work on any of its projects.

Between 2005 and 2007, Derek Slade was given the brief to look into the FCRA application of the charity, to set-up a HAPC branch in the Kutch area and to work with the charity’s representative in  Nilgiris to establish a Children’s Village for survivors of the Tsunami. It wasn’t long into Derek Slade’s appointment, before the charity started to become suspicious of him and his activities which led us to scrutinise his work.  When he was unable to keep to an agreement reached for HAPC to take over a school he managed since 2003, the charity severed its links with him and, contrary to his claims, discovered he had not done any work assigned to him by HAPC.

News of HAPC’s disassociation with Derek Slade was immediately published on the charity’s web site and it was this notice, which attracted many of Derek Slade’s past victims to us.  Once the horrible past of Derek Slade’s life was made known to us, we started working closely with Derek Slade’s victims and the police in helping them with their investigation into Derek Slade’s affairs.

Derek Slade also used the name Edward Marsh, a name police believe he picked up after trawling cemeteries until he found the grave of a boy who would have been a similar age to his own, had he lived.  He used this name to obtain a false passport to travel and set up schools abroad.

The charity will continue to work with the authorities, not only here in the UK but also in the areas where Derek Slade worked in Asia and Africa, with the main purpose of safeguarding the children who used to be in his care.  Anyone who has had dealings with Derek Slade/Edward Marsh in the past and has information, which may help with the continued investigation, please email us at info@hapc.co.uk or contact us by phone.  Your information will be held in the strictest confidence.
